February 2, 2012 – Membertou – Debra Campbell, instructor from the National Aboriginal Land Managers Association “NALMA” conducted a four-day workshop entitled the “Land Management Training Workshop 101” in Membertou, from Jan. 30- Feb. 2nd 2012. One of NALMA’s main objectives is to raise the professional standards for First Nations Lands Management.

The Governance Committee has been tasked with developing Land management laws and a code for the community of Membertou. Prior to this development, members will receive extensive training on land management issues. Membertou approached NALMA to conduct this training because NALMA is committed to taking a leadership role in ensuring that Lands Managers receive adequate training opportunities required to efficiently and effectively manage their lands. The training was intended for not only the Membertou Governance Committee members but for all interested community members. Membertou members are welcome to attend all training or committee meetings.

Rebecca Scirocco-Paul, committee member, stated “It is my job as a community member and Band member to become involved, and I want to be aware of what is going on.” The next land management training will be conducted on August 27-30th, 2012 and will be held at the Membertou Heritage Centre. To register for please call Cheryl Knockwood at 1-902-564-6466 ext. 2520.
