March 24, 2012 – Membertou’s Governance Committee hosted the Wi’kipaltimk Spring Gathering Pow-wow in their community at the Membertou (Boxing) Gym.

It was a huge success with an estimated 200 people showing up through out the day’s events. The events taking place at the Pow-wow began with a sun-rise ceremony and a community breakfast, which lead to elders teachings. In the afternoon there was a grand entry, drumming, and dancing. The event ended with a community and closing ceremony. Venders were on site, to sell their crafts.

It was truly a community driven event, that couldn’t have been possible without the community’s effort and participation. The Governance Coordinator, Cheryl Knockwood said, “the Governance Committee wanted to engage all ages of the community by distributing governance information during a fun-filled event”.

The Maupeltu Governance information was available at the event for the community members to review while they enjoyed, food, drumming and dancing.

The Governance Committee will be organizing more community events aimed at raising awareness of Lands and Citizenship issues in the next few years.

The next community session will be held on June 14th at the Bingo Hall. Meko Nicholas from the Lands Advisory Board will be discussing the First Nations Land Management Act. Everyone is welcome!!
