Potlotek recently played host to an unusual group of people… unusual in the sense that generally, not all stakeholders are invited to the table to discuss their future. The meeting, entitled, “Ilpukua’lu’kik Kikmanaq”, wanted to address the issue of Potlotek student attendance and retention. Understandably, this is an issue that is not unique to Potlotek and is a chronic problem nationally. Students for whatever reason simply refuse to go to school and as a result face the issue of retention.

The purpose of the meeting was to gather information from students, parents, educators, social workers, and leaders as to the root causes of chronic absenteeism along with reasons for success amongst students in P-12. Potlotek ...
