This story is about John Sock, a Migmag fisherman from Elsipogtog First Nation and how his career in commercial fisheries has been shaped by his values and beliefs and his lifelong interest in fishing and how learning has always played an important role in safe and efficient operations for himself and his crew. John is a captain and graduate of the pilot program of the Taan totjo nemeetjogoen ogtjit mimatjoagan (TTNOM) (“to go fishing for a living” in Mi’kmaq); an innovative training project offered through the NSMDC AAROM and their community partners, designed to enhance the self-sufficiency of Aboriginal fishers to efficiently and safely manage their fishing operations, while enhancing employment opportunities by diversifying their fishing activities and honouring the traditions of our ancestors.
