On March 18, an open house was held on the site of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation’s newly constructed accommodation facility adjacent to its processing plant in Bas Caraquet, New Brunswick. The facility, intimately called the “bunkhouse,” was built to house up to 40 plant workers who previously had to travel two hours per day to get back and forth from the plant. The Mi’kmaw community is located approximately 90 kilometers from the plant. Pêcheries Baie Chaleurs Fisheries (2012) Inc., a community-owned company, operates the commercial fishery including the plant which it purchased in 2012. It now processes close five million pounds of snow crab per year.
