It was a historical day on October 7, 2016 when Essissoqnikewey Siawa’sik – L’nuey Kina’matinewo’kuo’m (ESK) Mi’kmaq Immersion school officially opened its doors in Eskasoni to become the first fully Mi’kmaq speaking school in Canada.

The Mi’kmaw Immersion program has been a part of the Eskasoni Middle School curriculum for almost 16 years but sadly the numbers of declining Mi’kmaq speaking students is still on the rise.
