Just Move It! May is Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Being active daily can make a big difference in your quality of life. It not only can help you better manage your diabetes but it can also provide you with many other health benefits such as better posture and balance, stronger bones and muscles, increased energy, increased self-esteem, reduced stress and better sleep.

Being active each day is easy if you take every opportunity to keep your body moving. Help your body move more by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to the corner store, or cycling to work. Exercise your heart with aerobic activities, such as cycling, swimming, dancing or brisk walking and increase you muscle strength and bone mass with strength-training exercises, like lifting weights or carrying groceries. The more you do it, the more reasons you’ll find to make active living part of your life.

On March 19th 2012, an online, community-based physical activity and wellness initiative aimed at improving health and fitness among indigenous communities was launched in Canada.

Just Move It has been in place for 20 years in the US but is now a North American campaign to promote physical activity and wellness for Indigenous Peoples. The Assembly of First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the US-based Healthy Native Communities Partnership have joined together to offer this great initiative in Canada.
