Eskasoni Chief Leroy Denny calls them the “Mi’kmaw Rolling Stones.” Across Mi’kma’ki, they are simply known as The Relatives.

For four decades, the Eskasoni-based band has entertained audiences throughout Atlantic Canada and beyond, becoming one of the most recognizable and enduring musical groups in Mi’kmaq communities. Their songs, performances and commitment to their craft have earned them a place not only in the region’s music scene, but in Mi’kmaq cultural history.

The Relatives’ story began in 1985, rooted in Eskasoni’s rich musical tradition. Inspired by influential Mi’kmaq acts such as Lee Cremo and the Eastern Variations and the Feather Band, guitarist and founding member Tom Sylliboy began jamming with Robert Stevens and his late brother Reggie Sylliboy. The addition of Darren Stevens brought a new sound and energy to the group.

“We started jamming together and it really sounded good,” recalled Sylliboy. “I told the guys maybe we should start a band.”

The musicians soon recruited drummer Peter Stevens, whose experience and professionalism helped shape the group in its early days. Their first performance came at the Eskasoni Winter Carnival Variety Concert in 1986, where they played classic songs by bands such as The Beatles and Herman’s Hermits.
