Millbrook – October 1st is the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia. To support community activities, the Mi’kmaq History Month committee is launching the fund to help Mi’kmaq History Month events across the province.
The goals are to encourage Mi’kmaq History Month activities, support communities in their promotion of their month, and increase public awareness.

The committee will review all applications and allocate funding to activities which best demonstrate the goals of the initiative. This is for one-time events taking place during October and not on-going support. Assistance up to $2000 is available for successful applications.

Mi’kmaq History Month was first declared by Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaw Chief Ben Sylliboy in 1993 with the intention of promoting public awareness regarding the Mi’kmaq culture and heritage for all Nova Scotia citizens.
The Mi’kmaq History Month committees recognizes the support of the Province of Nova Scotia through the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage and Support4Culture, a designated lottery program of the Nova Scotia Provincial Lotteries and Casino Corporation.

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq has been appointed the administration and coordinating body for the Mi’kmaq History Month Advisory Committee. The Fund guidelines and application form can be found at www.mikmaqhistorymonth.com or call Tim Bernard, Director of History & Culture (902) 895-6385.

All applications must be submitted in print no later than 4:30 on June 15, 2015.
