Hantsport – With one year of operations complete, the Glooscap First Nation Economic Development Corporation (GFNEDC) is well on its way to creating a new model for First Nation economic development.

“Historically, First Nation economic development has been driven by gaming and tobacco. While they’re strong sources of revenue, there’s a hidden social cost,” says Chief Peters. “That’s why we’re dramatically broadening our perspective and creating an approach that is driven by innovation, collaboration and creativity. We’re working towards a model that doesn’t just benefit our members, but the entire region.”

The Corporation has many initiatives in the works, the most significant of which is the development of 25 acres of land off Highway 101 at Exit 8a.Through the cooperation and support of municipal, provincial and federal partners, the plan is to create an attractive commercial and cultural destination for travellers and businesses.

“The project is on a scale that simply can’t be delivered byour band members alone. That means we need to team up with other communities in the region,” says Jason Peters, CEO of GFNEDC. “The direct and indirect economic activity that will be created won’t just benefit us, but ourneighbours, as well.”
