The Community’s New Fishing Vessel “Nutamet.”

The lower St. Lawrence region of Québec, a few kilometers north of Rivière-du-Loup in Cacouna and Whitworth Township, is home to the Maliseet de Viger First Nation, the only Maliseet community in the Province of Québec. Their commercial fisheries enterprise (CFE), “Maliseet Fisheries,” represents the heart of the community’s economy. They have recently acquired a new 55’ multi-functional fishing vessel.

The Maliseet de Viger First Nation is the smallest First Nation in Canada in terms of land mass. Its two reserves in Cacouna and Whitworth Township have a total of 1.69 square kilometres. However, they have a thriving CFE that is reaping great benefits for its 1700 community members.
