Shirley Christmas, world-famous author of Shirley’s Corner, hosted the 6th Annual Appreciation BBQ on Wednesday, May 30. The yearly event began in 2013 as a ‘thank you’ to the Membertou Branch of the Cape Breton Regional Police Services, and has since grown to include all detachments.

A cold and windy day was no match for the heat and fire of the grill, as guests enjoyed all the classic favourites plus some special treats. The guests of honour were the men and women who proudly wear the uniform and serve our communities. Or was it really that lip-smacking cake? If you were to ask great-granddaughter Jaelyn (pictured), you know the answer!

The George Smith Experience provided the tunes and entertainment for the evening, while Madonna Johnson and Rebecca Johnson kept the kids busy with games and other goodies.

Before sending us home with leftovers, prizes were awarded to several lucky winners (including yours truly)! A round of applause goes to Membertou Chief and Council and Celtic Crest for providing the gifts.

A special thank you goes to the cooks – Samantha Smith, Mercedes Marshall, Shayla Christmas, Catherine Paul, Victor Christmas. They all made our bellies very happy.

The extra special thank you goes to our buddy Shirley, who hosts this beautiful event every single year. And also to the Cape Breton Regional Police Services, for keeping our community and families safe and secure. Welalioq!
