by Holly Denny, Mi’kmaw Summer Games

Chief Rod Googoo hosted the games in 1979.

In fall 2009, a group of Mi’kmaw Chiefs from Unama’ki began discussions on reviving the Summer Games, an athletic gathering and competitions that Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia previously held from the 1970s to 1990s.

It is We’koqma’q First Nations 2nd time hosting the summer games. The last time We’koqma’q hosted was in 2013.
There is usually roughly between 1500 to 2000 athletes from all the communities competing in over 17 sports. The sports offered change with different host communities every year due to what they can offer or have access to. We are offering 25 different competitions to compete in.

There are a few different changes we made with the games such as a lower price for vendors to sell their food or clothing, more youth divisions in sports, cash prizes for the princess pageant, and an elders lodging. One of the other interesting competitions will be done is the Fastest Mi’kmaw male and female, where people will sprint 300ft and the first person to cross the line will hold the faster Mi’kmaw male or female. There will be 2 separate races for male and female.

It takes quite a bit of hands to make the games successful; we are currently looking for more volunteers. We also added a volunteer prize draw that will be drawn on Sunday for anyone who has volunteered their time and hoping that attracts more volunteers. Prizes include 50’ TV, Patio Sets, Trampoline, Gift Cards, and much more.

Our entertainment schedule for the week is packed and exciting with local Mi’kmaw bands/singers. The main performance on Saturday will consist of Emma Stevens, Todd Googoo, and Classified. It is free for everyone and also a drug and alcohol free.
