The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq’s (CMM) previous Diabetes Community Consultant, Katherine Hillier PDt, was granted funding from Second Harvest Food Rescue to increase access to healthy food in First Nations communities. Second Harvest is the largest food rescue organization in Canada, working hard to improve access to ensure everyone, regardless of their economic situation, can have access to good, healthy food. The funding was used to successfully implement a one-time food box program in the Millbrook First Nation community. On September 23rd, Diabetes Community Consultant, Caylene Manning PDt (c), with CMM, and Teresa Flynn, PDt, CDE, Community Dietitian with Millbrook First Nation Health Center, put the funding plan into action! A grand total of 59 food boxes were distributed to community members, on a first come first serve basis. Good Food Box ingredients included fresh, local produce from Good Clean Farm and pantry staples including whole wheat flour, black beans, eggs, milk, and much more! Three traditional recipes along with all the necessary ingredients to bring these dishes to life were included in all food boxes! Katherine, Caylene and Teresa would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who participated and who was involved in making this initiative possible.
