As we continue our community discussions on cultural tourism and authenticity, we recently had the opportunity to participate in a tour of Eskasoni Cultural Journeys on Goat Island, located in Eskasoni, the largest Mi’kmaw community in the world. Our host was Faye Linkletter, General Manager of this interactive and award-winning authentic Mi’kmaw cultural experience, along with her team of cultural experts and knowledge keepers, and Mary Tulle, an experienced Tourism Consultant and passionate ally. Faye, Mary and the team have been working together to build the Eskasoni experience and brand and to capitalize on the interest visitors have for coming to Cape Breton Island to experience the three cultures within this area – Mi’kmaq, Gaelic and Acadian.

During our visit, we were able to walk the circular trail and listen to Mi’kmaw interpreters, dressed in traditional clothing, share their stories and songs and teachings. Our senses were engaged as we touched different hides and utensils; listened to the sounds of the drum, birds and wildlife; watched demonstrations of how different tools and implements were made and used; smelled the different forest scents and medicines; and tasted traditional food we cooked together over an open fire.
