Membertou Nova Scotia – A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed to advance Mi’kmaw Nationhood. It represents a unique partnership and commitment between Mi’kmaw leadership and the Fulcher Foundation. “For many years the Mi’kmaq have sought to adjust our governance at the Nationhood level by developing innovative and groundbreaking practices that would meet the changing landscape of our communities” said Senator Daniel Christmas.

The MOU is not legally binding and is an open and transparent commitment of good will and support. It provides $186,500 to support the Mi’kmaq Grand Council and various research and communication initiatives. “While no financial commitment exists beyond this amount, the Foundation is committed to creating a lasting partnership with the Mi’kmaq. Further financial support from the Foundation, if any, will reflect the ongoing relationship and initiatives we establish through our partnership,” said Regional Chief Paul Prosper, Assembly of First Nations.

“As budgeted costs to support Mi’kmaw Nationhood are beyond the Foundation’s existing contribution limits, our partnership provides a shining example for other private contributors to follow,” said Chief Deborah Robinson, Governance Co-Lead, Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs.
