Happy New Year.

Another year over and a new one is beginning. Unfortunately, we did not make the deadline for December’s issue so I am going to post some of the items now. That way folks will know what happened during the most difficult, and exciting, time of the year… Christmas.

But first, I would like to mention our Remembrance Day ceremony. Our ceremony was a bit difficult since we lost one of our Veterans prior to our school’s ceremony. In remembrance of Sma’knis Vincent Toney, a chair was left vacant amongst our remaining veterans. He attended every Remembrance Day ceremony at our school since we first opened in 2008 and we will truly miss his smiling face. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.

Our school community would like to thank Leeanne Maloney for her organizational skills, Leslie Googoo for creating our memory board, Eastern Eagle Drummers, our newly elected Chief (Michelle Glasgow) and council members, along with Legion members and host MC Stuart Knockwood. Thank you to our students who recited some poems. In Flanders Field was read by Delanie and Jorja-Lynn. Rory read Poppy, Poppy in Mi’kmaw. The Sma’knis poem written by Will Basque was read by Kaleirah and Jorja. I would also like to thank our acting principal, Greg Marr and acting vice-principal, Eileen Lucas, for their contributions. Wela’lioq to all the students who were very respectful during the ceremony.
