The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq – Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries Management (Mi’kmaw Conservation Group)

One of the most important goals of the work carried out by the AFSAR team is to engage our community members by sharing our knowledge of species at risk through community events and workshops. In 2022, the AFSAR team carried out multiple projects related to Two-Eyed Seeing and knowledge sharing with community members and salmon recovery partners.

In partnership with DFO’s Coldbrook Biodiversity Facility (CBF), MCG staff and Mi’kmaw community members from Millbrook First Nation and Sipekne’katik First Nation helped release 188 adult salmon throughout the Stewiacke River in October of 2022. CBF staff instructed staff and Mi’kmaw community members on how to identify adult salmon (male vs. female) and how to properly handle the fish while transporting them from their holding tanks to the river. The hope is that once released, these fish will successfully mate and spawn, creating future generations of salmon within the Stewiacke River.

On October 16th, 2022, MCG staff organized and hosted an Atlantic salmon celebration event at the Stewiacke River Park. This event included a Salmon ceremony performed by a community Elder Brian (Joe) Francis and MCG member Alanna Syliboy (Sipekne’katik First Nation).
