The Atlantic First Nations Nursing Professional Development Session was held at the Inn on Prince Truro, April 17-19, 2023. The three-day event was a hybrid meeting that included nearly 40 in person participants and up to 25 people online. The conference was a joint project with the planning committee of FNIHB representation, Carmel Peart, and Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs Secretariat represented by Vanessa Nevin, Ken Long, Cassey Henry and Elizabeth Camus. The planning committee also included First Nations Community Nurses, Karla Lambert, Jasine Bernard and Lacey King. M. Carol Consulting organized the session from the committee’s direction.

The session started with a beautiful opening prayer by Elder Carolyn Landrey. The session were Emceed by Walter Denny who showed his great skill in his emceeing abilities. Walter kept the session on time and provided comic relief when needed. Walter also provided a heartfelt moment of silents as part of the 3rd anniversary of the Nova Scotia mass shooting; the Nova Scotia government encouraged the moment of silence to honour the victims and survivors of the mass shooting.

Chief Andrea Paul had an opening statement. Chief Paul noted the wonderful and demanding work that First Nations Nurses are doing in community, that community Nursing work should be noted for the great importance to the wellbeing of First Nation communities.
