Four Mi’kmaq youths were the center of attention for their many achievements in the 30th annual Sammy Gehue Achievement Awards.

Community and family members gathered celebrate the achievements of Benson Marhsall; Dennis Francis; Peyton Innis and Emmit James Fisher at the Aug. 25th event hosted at the Inn on Prince Hotel & Conference Centre Truro.

The 30th cohort of Sammy Gehue Achievement Award Winners run a gamut of ages, from communities across Mi’kma’ki.
Francis was recognized for his plans to bring financial know-how to his community, as he prepares to study for a Bachelor of Commerce.

While attending school at North Nova Education Center, he earned distinction among his peers for hosting an educational segment in the school news program, with a Mi’kmaq word of the day and for his work at a community ice cream shop.

Innis received her reward for her tireless celebration and sharing of her own culture. This included teaching others about the meaning of important aspects of Mi’kmaq culture, such as the Honour Song.

Innis has used items like her ribbon skirt and hand drum – and performed the Water Song – to educate classmates about her culture.
Fisher’s tireless advocacy for his Mi’kmaq culture earned him a Sammy Gehue Achievement Award.
